Once upon a time there was this very tall, gawky girl who had to sew her own clothes if she were going to have anything to wear. And never mind her size 12 ‘gunboats’ which at age 14 only Hush Puppies could accommodate. Who knew that being height challenged would lead to a career choice?
Deb Durham is a 30+ year veteran and pioneer in the spokesperson industry with a unique dual perspective. She’s worked both in front of the camera as a 3rd party spokesperson herself as well as behind the camera brokering deals between hundreds of expert and celebrity spokespeople and major brands.
After brief stints in the home-sewing industry (one way to get pants long enough!), Deb started as a “one-man-spokesperson band” in 1974.* Early in her career as a freelance spokesperson, Deb leveraged her expertise as a home economist with B.S. and M.S. degrees from Purdue University’s School of Consumer & Family Sciences and as a regular guest on ABC’s The Home Show. In those early days Deb repped such household names as HandiWipes, Chex Party Mix, SC Johnson’s OFF!® and Procter & Gamble. Appearing on top TV venues including the Today Show, Good Morning America, Regis & Kathie Lee, HGTV, Lifetime Network and The Discovery Channel plus countless satellite media tours and local market TV appearances nationwide, she delivered key brand messaging for her clients.
Seeing the need for a variety of expert spokespeople, in 1989 Deb launched SPOKESPERSONS PLUS NETWORK® creating a database of hundreds of book authors and experts brokering deals between them and Fortune 500 brands. Over time she established strong relationships with agents and managers for high profile celebrities as well. Today Deb can pick up the phone and get to virtually any talent within minutes.
Deb has made matches between spokespeople and brands ranging from InSinkErator to Intel, Microsoft to Nestle, SC Johnson’s Scrubbing Bubbles® to Shell Oil and from American Express to Wal-Mart.
Over the past few years, more and more people who wanted to learn how to land spokesperson jobs sought Deb’s advice. So in January 2013, in tandem with the brokerage side of her business, she launched a new service, So You Want To Be A Spokesperson to better educate spokespeople on how to work with brands effectively.
So when it comes to the spokesperson business, whether you want to hire a spokesperson or be a spokesperson, Deb Durham is the authority!
On a personal note, based in Los Angeles, this 6 foot blonde can be spotted driving her 1998 BMW roadster up the coast highway. Her personal passion is home design and, in particular, the charm of small homes that are beautiful, nurturing and energy efficient. And, speaking of abodes, you know Deb's in the house when you hear her trademark laugh!
*Please humor Deb when she tells you she started the company when she was only 8.
